FILM CASE STUDY/ THE DEPARTED TRAILER

What do you learn about the characters?

In this trailer we learn the Jack Nicholson is who they are after. He is the the "gang leader" and has people working for him. Jack Nicholson is the stereotypical gangster he is in a suit the majority of the trailer which shows that being a gangster is his profession. Leonardo DiCaprio plays as an "undercover cop".Throughout the trailer we see him getting employed by the by the police force, we go on a journey with him. Matt Damon is a police officer who is unable to share his work life with his partner.

How does the trailer begin and end?

The trailer begins with a voice over "When I was your age"-this line makes it seem as though he is telling a story.
The trailer ends with a montage, with a cartoon gun.

What does the mise-en-scene tell us about the film?

It tells the audience that it is modern film as the policemen are in modern policemen attire, however there are scenes in the trailer where we can see vintage cars which reinforces the fact that the character Jack Nicholson plays is a stereotypical mafia kind of gangster. Throughout the trailer he is also in suit which allows the audience to understand that he that what he does is for a living. The trailer conforms to the conventions of a gangster film; there's a lot of low level lighting. There are scenes in Urban/city locations and rundown area. Formal outfits like suits and ties is definitely what makes this trailer a recognisable convention in a gangster film alongside props such as guns,  fancy cars, cigarettes and large sums of money  which is seen in this trailer. The make up consisted of blood and scars.

What can be said about the editing and therefore the narrative?

The whole narrative is a search for the most wanted gangster. The way in which it the audience was able to understand the narrative is by putting all the scenes in chronological order. The trailer begins with a black fade into the first scene. Throughout the trailer there are a lot of cross and dissolve fades which allows there to be a continuous flow of scenes. At the end of the trailer there's a montage with country/folk music on top of it which makes all the violence taking place seem not that serious. The montage concludes the trailer and highlights all the important bits. The trailer shows the events taken place to find "the rat".

Use of dialogue?

The majority of the dialogue taking place is in relation to the search and the procedures taken place to find him. One dialogue which struck me and was kind of similar to my storyline is when Matt Damons partner says to him "you are trouble" and he replies "you don't know the half of me".
